All Saints - Church of Ireland, Blackrock
In 1868 the new parish of Newtown Park was formed. It comprised of parts of the parishes of Stillorgan, Monkstown and Kill.
The church of All Saints was consecrated on 21 April 1870, nearly two years after the foundation stone was laid. The inscription on the trowel used reads:-
" Presented to Matthew Pollock Esq. on the occasion of his laying the Foundation Stone of All Saint's Church Newtown Park 15th Sept. 1868." “Genesis 28.22” “And this Stone which I have set for a Pillar shall be God’s house."
The architect of the church was John McCurdy (c.1824-1885) who trained under Frederick Darley. He married Lucy Heinekey and their daughter Agatha Mary married Adam Findlater. The McCurdys lived at various addresses in south Dublin including, "The Cottage" , Newtown Park, and Chesterfield, Blackrock. The original architectural drawings are still extant and are available to view on the RCB website.
The design is early English Gothic style employed “a small kit of modestly sized parts that combine to create an attractive picturesque exterior and an equally impressive interior of rich spatial quality.” (Ken Mawhinney).
The first incumbent was the Rev George T. Stokes, an ecclesiastical historian whose works include "The antiquities from Kingstown to Dublin." He is also credited with celebrating the first Harvest Thanksgiving in Ireland in 1871. A robed choir introduced in 1873 is still in place.
The church contains windows by Wilhelmina Geddes and Sir Ninian Comper and some beautiful nineteenth-century stained-glass windows. It is also home to a Dun Emer chancel carpet and baptistry murals by Brigid Ganly.
The "substantial organ", built by George Benson was rebuilt in 1992 by Derek Verso & Co. See Stephen Adam's great site on church organs which describes All Saints as "A miniature Anglican Cathedral".
