The Parishes of Kilmacud & Stillorgan were united under Monkstown for the period 1660-1764
In 1908 the combined Registers of Births Marriages and Deaths for the union of Monkstown were published in book form by the Parish Register Society of Dublin and edited by one of Stillorgan's Parishioners - Mr Henry Seymore Guinness. The list continues using the parochial returns up to 1800. When the Register opens, the Union included the parishes of Monkstown, Kill o' the Grange, Dalkey, Killiney, Tully, Stillorgan and Kilmacud, in fact, the entire district bounded by the suburban parish of Donnybrook on the north, the parish of Bray on the south, on the east by the sea, and the Dublin Mountains on the west. As population increased, many of the included parishes dropped away, the severance of Stillorgan and Kilmacud taking place in 1764; nevertheless, up to the year 1800, when the present volume closes, Monkstown was still the principal centre of registration for the district.
The first Register of the Union, a book of seventy-four folios, measuring 14 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches, and bound in white vellum. The first four folios are missing, and were apparently not forthcoming in the year 1817, when, as appears from a note inside the cover, in the handwriting of Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms, and Churchwarden of the parish, the Register was rebound. A few of the pages are mutilated, and there are some serious gaps in registration, a note on page 139 stating that the register of marriages between the years 1708 and 1750 was lost. The entries, with exceptions noted, cover the following periods :--
Baptisms, 16 November 1679 to 15 October 1785
Burials, 11 August 1676 to 14 August 1783
Marriages, 20 January 1669 to 16 August 1786.
From this date until the year 1804 no parish registers for Monkstown are forthcoming ; this
interval has been supplied by printing as Appendix " A " a transcript of the yearly returns furnished by the parish at the annual visitations of the Bishop of the Diocese. These so-called "Parochial Returns," originally filed with the Archbishop's Registrar, were deposited in the Public Record Office at Dublin. (destroyed in 1922).
